Australia, Day 11

Lessons in Higher Education:

Some of these may be specific to Macquarie or even just to the Centre for Learning and Teaching.
I was trying to learn about retention and graduation numbers for the undergraduate student population, but so far no one has these numbers -- interesting, as at Auburn, almost anyone in administration can rattle off these numbers.  Interestingly enough, the graduate student graduation rate is of bigger concern as folks need to get their postgraduate degree in 4 years; otherwise, the funding disappears.
Undergraduate students, once accepted to university, can take a GAP year and defer university attendance for one year to do some casual work and/or travel the world.  Unfortunately, quite a few students do not make it back to university after this year.
The employment system of faculty is permanent staff (our tenure-line faculty), contract staff (our lecturers) and casual staff (TES and part time).  Apparently, a lot of courses or units are taught by contract or casual staff, which is causing some issues, just like in the US.

The university has once a week a Farmer's Market in the center of campus -- it is a small stall but with a good variety of veggies and fruit, some fresh bread, eggs, and honey.

And then later on, we saw the vivid light festival in the harbour and Sydney downtown.  Very impressive!
